Long ago the Clans of Cain knew them as the Gaki. Before that time, they knew themselves as the Wan Kuei. In the Modern Age, they were known as Kuei-Jin, but in 2077, the Hungry Dead are known simply as Cathayans. Like many other races, these predator must gain their sustenance from others. Unlike Kindred, however, they do not solely feed from blood: They feed from Qi (chi), the life energy of others, living or dead.

At some point, the Wan Kuei, under the instruction of the Quincux, pushed out from their homeland into Californa, specifically San Franciso. With California at the time ruled by a Barony of Anarch nations, the Wan Kuei were able to establish a foothold within the city. By the time the Clans of Caine noticed what was happening, it was already too late, there were far too many of the Wan Kuei to combat against. However, San Francisco was not their only target.

Most of Amercia's Major cities held influences of Asian origins, small districts all named "Chinatown" started to appear all over the country. By the time the Corporate wars began, the Wan Kuei had moved beyond San Francisco. The Wan Kuei met the most resistance to their presence in New Orleans in the early 2000s, despite their role in helping to put down Zapasthura, the Awakened Antedilluvian of the Ravnos Clan. Though the Wan Kuei had little interest in the city itself, they were regarded as a threat to the Prince's rule over the city, and the first court was pushed out of the city.

The Second push into New Orleans was better received, but the Wan Kuei still faced scrutiny from the Kindred Clans due to the first Court. New Orleans held a potent Dragon Nest the Wan Kuei was interested in. in order to disguise the Dragon Line that led to it, the Wan Kuei took control of Old and New Chinatown, renovating the rundown neighborhoods into a prominent commercial District. By the time the Corporate Wars Ended, this district was ruled by those who remained.
In 2077, the Sundering of the Wall, and the blood red Skies over New Orleans, now called Crescent City, signaled to them the rise of the Demon Emperor, and the war of which they had been preparing for centuries.
