Mortals : Humanity of the Dark Metropolis

"I'm living in that 21st century, doin' somethin' mean to it
Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it
screens from the 80s, got a nice ring to it
i guess every super hero need his theme music

no one man should have all that power
the clock's tickin' i just count the hours
Stop trippin' i'm trippin' off the power
(21st-century schizoid man)"
--- Kanye West, "power"
Imagine life as you know it. You have bills to pay, a job to bide your time in, and a family to look after. You have woes, fears, and stresses. You have comfort, happiness, and excitement. It’s Life! Who doesn’t know how to live day by day and find joy in each moment of it? This is what it means to be human. To live.

Now, Imagine that next door to you, someone had been murdered last year. Now the house remains vacant because the realtor is in a contract negotiation with a psychic to exorcise all the ghosts that now haunt the place. Imagine seeing the once dead now risen again and mopping the floors of your office job. Imagine that hearing the word werewolf makes you want to wear a mask outside in public. Imagine knowing that vampires are sitting on the bench next to you and are telling you stories about life before the 1970s when they were fiction, in fact, when all the supernatural world was still fictional to the world.
This is what it means to be human. You are the dominant race. You are what cities and civilization was built for. Your world and its history was all about Human Kind’s achievements. And your parents and grandparents remember the day that all the stories were proved true. Your life is a fairy tale, and if anyone has read a real fairy tale they’d know that no fairy tale is cheerful and happy all the way through. There are horrors that live in the tales, and they now are a part of your life.

This is Humanity, the many lives that dwell in the darkness.
:: The Evolution of Humanity ::
In the beginning, beings like the Tide Born and Essence Born innately have Essence, have Magic, as a part of their being. They are the living manifestations of that energy and nature’s first peoples. Then came humanity, evolved out of the world over time into beings that could be on level with the others. These Earth Born inherently have no Essence within them, and for this for human generations, they were seen as second to the Tide and Essence Born.
Then out of the punishments of the Tide Born and Essence Born came the Vampires and the Therianthropes, beings cursed with their Essence twisted. Around this time, Humanity began to evolve again. It is unclear if it was due to interbreeding with Nature and Tide Born, but Humanity began to show limited innate ties to Essence. While never to the magnitude of their predecessors, these humans, called the Psychic, had ways to connect to the natural world and for the first time, part of humanity was seen as equal to the others.
Humanity is born of the need to survive and to gain power, something pushed into its extreme with the Vampires. As the Psychics grew in prominence, other Humans began to reach for the Deals of achieving the same power. These deals for Essence created the line of Humans known as Sorcerers. While the Psychic was born with their ties, the Sorcerer deals with more powerful beings in order to have a touch of that power base in Essence. Between the two, the balance of the world was established. Humanity as a whole is the neutral line of the world, where they are both a part of it and yet separate from it. Then to either side resides the Psychics that forge the bridge to the Natural world, and the Sorcerer that forge the bridge to the Unnatural world.

Creating a Human
In Requiem by Night, there are three types of Humans to choose from.
The Mundane stands for the average human. You may not have magic at your fingertips or be born with unusual powers or an unusual background, but you are human and there are many of you. Without you, there would be no city, no life, no anything.
The Sorcerer stands for the magic practitioner. Humans have no inborn power, but reaching out to tap into the power of the magical world or that of its energy, the human can make a bond that grants the human access to magic they normally would not have.
The Psychic stands for humans born with abilities. If they had a being of Essence in their family generations before their own birth, were touched by the spiritual world at some point in their lifetime, or were changed in the womb by forces outside the mother’s control, the Psychic has a natural connection to the magic world that we all live in.
